PaperStyle: Digital Notebook
Privacy Policy

The short version
Your notebooks never leave your computer unless you choose to back them up somewhere. PaperStyle has no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no crash reporting. The only information we handle is what is needed to sell and license the app.
What stays on your computer
Everything you write, draw or add to a notebook is stored only on your computer. We cannot see it. Backup (.diary) files are readable, unencrypted copies: store them somewhere you trust.
Optional features that contact other services
- Notebooks folder: copies your notebooks into a folder you choose. The app sends nothing over the internet for this; if that folder is synced by another service (iCloud, OneDrive, Dropbox), that service's own policy applies.
- Google Drive backup: if you sign in, the app copies notebook backups to your Google Drive using your account. The app asks Google only for access to the files it creates itself. The sign-in token is kept on your computer: in a private file in the app's data folder on a Mac (readable only by your user account), and in Windows Credential Manager on Windows. We do not receive your backups and cannot access your Drive. Disconnecting in the app removes the token. When you sign in, the app also asks Google to confirm which Google account it is (the standard "openid" sign-in). We never receive your email address, name or password. Our licence server keeps only a scrambled, one-way code made from Google's internal account number, next to your licence or free trial, for one purpose: to make sure one Google account is used with one person's PaperStyle licence or free trial. It is kept as long as the licence record (see Retention below), and you can ask us to delete it at info@amastran.net.
Google user data. PaperStyle's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We do not use Google user data for advertising, sell it, or use it to train AI or machine-learning models.
What we collect to license the app
When the app starts a trial, checks or activates a licence, it contacts our licensing service (hosted on Cloudflare) and sends:
- a device identifier: a one-way scrambled value (SHA-256) made from your computer's hardware identifier and the product name. Your real hardware identifier never leaves your computer. It is the same after a reinstall, which is one of the ways we keep to one free trial per person;
- the app version and whether you run macOS or Windows;
- a random one-time value and the current time (to stop copied requests being replayed);
- when you confirm your email: the email address you type and the code we sent you.
Like any internet request, these reveal your IP address to our licensing service and its hosting provider (Cloudflare). We use IP addresses only for short-lived rate limiting that blocks abuse, and do not store them in our licence records.
Paying. You pay through Whop (whop.com), which sells the app for us. They collect your payment details, name, email and billing country as the payment processor; we never see your card number. Their own privacy notice applies to that data: Whop's privacy policy. They tell us your email address, the plan you bought, and the status of your subscription (active, cancelled, refunded, disputed).
Email. When you confirm your email address (before your free trial starts, or when you activate or recover a purchase by email), we send a one-time code to that address through our email provider, Resend, and, when a licence moves to another computer, a notice to the purchase address.
How it is stored. An email address you confirm with a mailed code is kept readable, as you typed it, together with its canonical form, the date you confirmed it, when we last saw it, the computers it was confirmed on and the licences bought with it. This is for support and records only: never for marketing, and never sold or shared. A keyed-hash (scrambled) version is also kept, and it is what the one-free-trial-per-person rule matches on. The email address on a Whop purchase is kept only as a keyed hash. We also keep your device identifiers, the licence state, and a log of licence events (activation, move, refund) so we can support you and prevent misuse. Licence records are kept while the licence exists and 12 months afterwards. Payment-provider event logs, stripped of names and emails, are deleted after 90 days. Email codes expire after 15 minutes.
Your email address and your computer
Your email address. Before the free trial starts, PaperStyle asks you to confirm your email address by typing a code we send you. After you update to version 1.0.6, people who already use PaperStyle are asked to do this once. We keep your confirmed email address on our licensing server for three reasons only: to recognise that a free trial has already been used (one free trial per person: your computer, your Google account code and your confirmed email each count), to match your subscription to you, and to help you if you contact us for support. We never use it to send news, offers or marketing, and we never sell or share it. We also keep a record of which computers and which licence are linked to your address, so that we can answer support questions. What exactly is kept is listed under How it is stored.
Your computer. To recognise a computer that has already had a free trial, our server stores a one-way scrambled identifier of the computer (made from its hardware identifier and the product name; not your name, your files or your notebooks). It is the same after a reinstall.
Deleting your data. Email info@amastran.net from the address you used, and we will delete the readable email record and every link to your computers and licences straight away. Deleting also ends the licence; licence records are otherwise kept while the licence exists and for 12 months afterwards. Scrambled markers that stop a second free trial may remain unless you also ask us to remove those. Once they are removed, we can no longer recognise an earlier free trial for that address.
Where it is stored. On Cloudflare, which hosts our licensing server.
Updates
The app checks for updates by downloading one small public file from updates.amastran.net. That request does not include your notebooks, your email or your licence. Like any web request it reveals your IP address to the host (Cloudflare).
Sharing
We share data only with the services above (Cloudflare hosting, Whop payments, Resend email), only as needed to run the app, and never sell it.
Email you send us. "Report a bug" and "Send feedback" only open your own email app with our address filled in; nothing is sent until you press send, and then we have what you wrote.
Your rights
You can ask us what we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it (this also ends the licence), by emailing info@amastran.net. Wherever you live, you may also ask us to stop using your data, and you may complain to your local data-protection authority. We reply within 30 days.
Children
PaperStyle is a notebook, and there is no minimum age to use it. Subscriptions are bought by an adult, and the optional Google Drive backup follows Google's own account rules. We do not knowingly collect personal information about children beyond what the licence check needs (see above). If a parent or guardian wants any such information deleted, email info@amastran.net.
Changes
We will update this page and the date above if this policy changes.
